Still Human

What if our experiences, interfaces, and gestures left our screens and entered our spaces?

Constraints

Still Human “Architecture in the Age of Selfies and Surveillance” was my Master of Architecture thesis project. For nearly a year, I investigated how architecture could enhance social relationships, physical abilities, and spatial agency if buildings were designed around digital information, communication technologies, and media devices.

Goals: an architectural three dimensional user interface where...

1. where the entire human body is a point of gesture control

2. people can experience more control (offline and online) over their space and social interactions

The Problem: Buildings are designed as static interfaces, ignoring our physical and digital needs

Since its inception, architecture has not designed buildings around our digital capabilities. For example, think of a moment when you’ve messaged someone who is in the same room or building. Your cell phone or computer allows you to bypass the other people in the room or the walls that separate you from the other person. Our buildings should allow us to do the same.

Outcomes

The Solution: A Full-Scale, Interactive Installation

The final installation was exhibited over two weekends at the California College of the Arts, including The Master of Architecture Thesis Presentation and the CCA 2019 Commencement Exhibition
